Music Monday # 12: Into Dust – Mazzy Star

An Angel Describing Air

It’s been featured in more films and television episodes than I can remember but I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song.  It was shortly before my 21st birthday back in 1994 and this album had been recommended to me as they sounded similar to my beloved Cranes.  I’ve often said that to me, Alison Shaw from Cranes sounds like an angel describing sunshine.  If that is so, then Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star sounds like an angel describing air.

That day back in that little record store, the assistant skipped straight to track 9 and I listened to the first 30 seconds of “Into Dust” and then decided to buy the album.  I didn’t need to listen to any more to know that this would become one of my most played albums of all time.

Mazzy Star - “Into Dust”

So Tonight That I Might See (1993)

Still falling
Breathless and on again
Inside today
Beside me today
Around broken in two
'Till you eyes shed
Into dust
Like two strangers
Turning into dust
'Till my hand shook with the way I fear

I could possibly be fading
Or have something more to gain
I could feel myself growing colder
I could feel myself under your fate
Under your fate

It was you breathless and tall
I could feel my eyes turning into dust
And two strangers turning into dust
Turning into dust

  1. So pretty, yet hauntingly sad. It seems to have a lead into personal triumph somehow, yet that is not included in the lyrics. Very interesting!

Hello from Speedy in Minnesota :-)

  2. about your commentc choice with blogger "drop down" style ....

I did this for a while as a test, and added an alternate way to comment. Trust me, about 20% of your readers will not be able to comment AT ALL, no matter how many times they try.
You loose readers and valuble comments using this format.

  3. @ Lady Java: Thank you!

@ Holly: Thanks so much for your comment! I'm really sorry - I don' understand what you're saying about the comment form. I know that one ofmy friends can't comment (so she does so on Facebook) - would you be able to tell me exactly what you mean so I can try get to the bottom of it? I get a lot of comments on my London blog which has the same commeting system so i don't think most people have a problem with it.
