Reason why I love US TV more than UK TV

Alrighty.  I know I’m always going on about the state of UK television but the reason is that fifteen years ago, UK television pwned US television.  I’m a little disenchanted, that’s all.

But today’s reason that I love US television more is down to a little word called “scheduling”.  I scour the Internet daily for news of when Merlin, The Fixer and Being Human might be returning but the BBC and ITV are so paranoid that they only release airing dates weeks before screening, days if you are unlucky!  I nearly missed the start of the last Doctor Who season and that would have been an outright tragedy.

So I am happy to say that I came upon this list in a forum and thought it looked mighty useful and informative.  These are US Fall screening dates (and I personally follow the US dates for my shows even though I live in the UK).  I’m still waiting to see if the forum would mind me linking back to them so they shall remain anonymous for now.

  1. Glad to see you are reading Heidi Holland on Mugabe. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get it here in Zim and have only read excerpts. Will probably get it when I go down to South Africa next and see if it makes it past immigration control at Harare Int. Airport!!!

  2. Hey Denford. Thanks for stopping by! If you don't think it will get stolen, I can post you my copy once I've finished. Although, my experience of Southern African postal services isn't great.

I've been trying to find out the history of Zimbabwe from around 1900 to 1950 or so. Can you recommend any good sources or books? I wrote this post and as you can see, I got stuck.

  3. Okay, I thought that was just me. I'm always scouring the Net trying to find Doctor Who and Torchwood dates and it drives me batty that they wait so long to announce them. I don't actually understand what the deal is--do they *want* people to miss the shows? Argh.

Thanks for this list! I was about to start looking for when all the new shows start. And I actually am watching the Season 1 DVDs of Gossip Girl now...I finally caved to this guilty pleasure...heh!

  4. I'm getting a bit sick of the crime and mystery genre on television. Now at night on nearly every single channel it is crime, the only one I like is NCIS.

  5. @ Valerie: They don't want people to miss shows. They just think the whole world reads newspapers and the TV times and they are too paranoid to dare let the "Other Channel" know what they are intending.

Isn't Gossip Girl great? Where are you up to?

@ Pizza: Yes, you do have to look long and hard sometimes to escape all the crime. In the UK, they put them all on one channel, so it is easy to avoid them.

  6. Ahhh, so it's the secret TV station rivalry thing that makes them so covert with TV times. Unbelievable. I wonder if that really helps them, or hurts them with all the people who forget to watch!

Around here, they advertise the schedule months in advance. Actually, it's overkill. There are a few series that they've promo-ed so much that I basically hate them on sight now. Not exactly the best strategy.

I just commented on your GG post. I'm still working on the 2nd season. It's really an amazing show, because they keep expanding more and more on the characters. It's actually pretty amazing how they can make you feel for the characters you used to hate, and get annoyed with the characters you thought were the good guys--and then back again. It's actually pretty realistic to teenage life!
